How can I split my cable without losing my internet connection?

Yes, sounds like a splitter. I have Shaw cable/internet. From my wall jack, they have it split - 1 to the cable modem, the other to my "tv" (which I have then split a bunch more times). Seems to work fine. So, must be your splitter that is faulty.
