My seven month old female kitten has was neutered 2 days ago and already has an infection. Is that normal?

We have two kittens, the male and female were both done on the same day. The male kitten came back extremely lively and has returned to normal already. However the female after going for a routine check up 2 days later has been given antibiotics after the vet said she had a temperature and an infection. We were told to administer the anitbiotics but no other instructions. Can anyone recommend anything else we can do to help her feel better and get rid of the infection as quickly as possible? We're trying to keep the male away as much as poss but they get upset when separated too much so it seems to do more harm than good!!
